From all of us at Traffic.com, thank you for following our first ever Roadtrip adventure! After over 5 thousand miles, 22 days, 132 cups of coffee, and incalculable amounts of gasoline, our billboard truck has finally reached Los Angeles where it will permanently patrol the road (at least until some Hollywood mogul recognizes its potential and scoops it up for a feature flick).

Johnny Goodtimes and Lyle Lovinit have had a blast meeting commuters and exploring many of our nation’s greatest cities. But it’s finally time to part ways—Johnny is back and Philly, where he’ll continue his reign as Rock Paper Scissors champ. Lyle is lighting up the local stops on yet another truck trek.

The Roadtrip may be over for Johnny and Lyle, but YOUR Traffic.com journey has just begun.

Johnny Comes Marching Home Again…(Hoorah)

Johnny Goodtimes came by our Philly office this morning for a quick debriefing (and to return the spare set of truck keys that mysteriously left San Francisco in his pocket). His exit interview went something like this:

So Johnny, aside from the bed bugs in Reno, how was the trip?

JGT: It was awesome but I’ve never been so exhausted.

You do look pretty worn out. But tell us a little about the ride. What was your most surprising traffic experience?

JGT: Honestly, it was that stretch from Philly to D.C. I mean, we hit it during rush hour and thought it’d be a nightmare. But it was completely clear.

Must be that Traffic.com road-clearing karma. Was it like that the whole way? Where did you see the worst road conditions?

JGT: I’d say definitely Detroit. Just coming into the city it was pretty rough. The interstate was so poorly paved and people were just flying around us on all sides like a video game or something.

So would you say that Detroit has the most aggressive drivers then?

JGT: Well yeah I would have said Detroit, but Lyle definitely thought Chicago drivers were the most aggressive.

So when you finally got off the main highways and hit Route 66, what did you think?
JGT: It wasn’t what I expected, I guess because it kind of runs in spurts now between the major highways. It’s not like a magical trip through time with endless hotdog stands and neon signs like I thought. It was cool though.

The Best of Road Trip 2006

Favorite City: Hard to say.  No doubt, Salt Lake City was the most surprising. I really thought that fun wasn’t even legal there, but I had a blast. Chicago was great, and I had an amazing night in Amarillo.

Favorite Food: For me, there was no debate. I loved Primanti Brothers, but the crab cakes at Faidley’s were the best. I’m still thinking about them, and will definitely make a point of going back to Baltimore strictly for the crab cakes.

Favorite Cultural Activities:  The 7th inning stretch at Wrigley Field made the hair stand up on the back fo my neck, and hanging with a conspiracy theorist named Sherman was wild, but my favorite cultural experience was the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Best night: Either the night I spent flirting with my waitress in Amarillo or the greatest baseball game I’ve ever seen in Denver, with my brother in law starting one of the best waves in sports history.

Best Interview: The Average Homeboy.

Place I need to re-visit to someday: Springfield, Illinois. I really wanna see the Lincoln museum and eat more corn dogs.

Prettiest Stretch of the Drive: I-70 between Denver and Salt Lake City.

The Last Night

I headed out on Tuesday night to see another old friend of mine from work, Jen, and a couple of her friends. We went to a great dive bar called Zeitgeist with a terrific beer garden. After talking to them for a few minutes, it was time to start my mission-Rock Paper Scissors. After a couple of early wins, I fell to to pieces. I think it was the time difference.  But the crowd was certainly into it, and I got pictures of several of them (look in the zeitgeist). I had to leave at about 11:15 pm to make sure I caught BART, the train system used by many in San Fran to avoid traffic, back to Berkeley.

Touch Down!
August 2nd, 2006

Well gang, I just touched down in Philly. Needless to say, my trip east wasn’t nearly as exciting as my trip west. I’m at the luggage claim now. If my past is any indication, I will spend the next several hours trying to find out which exotic locale my luggage is currently on it’s way to.

Be sure to check in tommorrow, when I will tell you my favorite people, places, and corn dogs on the ride out west! And, of course, details of my rock paper scissors outing in San Fran.
